Cool Trade Brad Penny for Mark Teahen? - 08-22-2006, 04:02 AM

Hey guys. Need some help here, and I'd love anyone to chime in.

I'm in a H2H league where we keep 20 of 25 players in what amounts to a dynasty league set-up. It's daily transactions, so there's a lot of room to move pitchers in and out on a day-to-day basis. There are also only 10 hitter slots compared to the normal 9 pitching slots, making pitching more valuable than it is in normal leagues. I've done very well in pitching all year long, leading in K's, Wins, and placing 3rd in WHIP and 4th in ERA. It's also important to note that I lead production in K's by over 220 strikeouts pver the guy in 2nd place in the category and 260 strikeouts over the next playoff team. Basically, I've got a bit of leeway in the category, and perhaps pitching in general, although I feel a bit uncomfortable giving up a strength since it's gotten me this far. So that's where I stand in my mind.

Anyway, I've been offered Mark Teahen for my Brad Penny. This entices me because I've had some trouble figuring out who to use for my final Utility spot. Currently I'm sporting guys like Upton and Snelling in the final slot, and that's got me worried for the playoffs. I've essentially sealed up a first-week bye, so I've got a few weeks to figure things out. Trouble is, the trading deadline is less than a week away, so any shoring up I want to do via trade has to happen soon.

The allure of Teahen is obvious. He could fill the final Util spot and give me the power I've been lacking a bit this year. My problem is twofold, however. First, I love Penny and he's in Dodger Stadium and the much weaker NL. I've enjoyed owning him this year and planned on keeping him. Secondly, despite the fact that I do like Teahen an awful lot right now, I'm by no means sold on him. Is there anyone out there that thinks he'd be as good a keeper as Penny in a dynasty format?

Here's my team, and see if there's any help you can provide. Thanks in advance.

C: V.Martinez
1B: B.Broussard/Ed.Perez (yes, I'm using a platoon, and it's quite useful since there are daily transactions)
2B: B.Phillips
3B: M.Mora
SS: R.Furcal
OF: M.Ramirez
OF: C.Beltran
OF: A.Rios
Util: T.Hafner
Util: C.Snelling
Bench: B.Upton
DL: C.Blake

P: R.Johnson, E.Bedard, B.Penny, K.Millwood, F.Hernandez, M.Mussina, R.Clemens, J.Lackey, B.Wagner, J.Putz, T.Hoffman, P.Neshek, T.Mastny, K.Lohse (yes, you read that last one correctly, and yes, I'm drunk)

With Roberts added, I might go for this.

Is there any chance of getting a full time 1B instead of the platoon?

Unless steals will help you (Roberts), I don't think those guys are above replacement level. Is someone like Dm.Young on the WW?

I could deal Bedard for Jason Giambi, but I just don't see the point in a dynasty league. I'd rather deal Bedard for somebody younger and much tastier (which is a distinct possibility given we have a big O's fan in the league and he covets Bedard -- he's in contention right now, though, and doesn't have a bat that he could spare). I've tried offering Penny for Sexson all year long, but the guy just won't bite, citing Penny's injury risk, etc.

I'll likely shore up the first base spot in the off-season, but for now, the platoon is what I'll have to live with.

This is a tough one, and Roberts and Teahen would really shore up my last Utility spot (and hell, Teahen is better than Mora right now, too). I've been lucky with my pitchers' health all year, though, and I can just see it all falling apart as soon as I deal one of them off, lol.

I'm really not sure. I love Penny in a dynasty format but he's not THAT young (ok, he's 28, and Teahen is about to be 25) and he has a history of injuries (though better lately). But I think Teahen has probably moved into the class of someone who is going to have a job somewhere for his career, even if it's not KC. So if Teahen and Roberts can put you over the top I would strongly consider pulling the trigger.

I guess my big worry is whether or not Teahen's power is for real. In the last month, Teahen and Roberts have been Top 30 in terms of production, while Penny's been more in the 130 range. I'm not sold on Teahen's power because he's still got a high G/F. It's a tough call, though, because I could use the offensive help.

Ah, the joys of a tough GMing decision.

Bodz, Roberts and Teahan will, almost beyond a doubt, really help you this year. If you're following closely enough to switch EPerez and Broussard, you'll have little trouble figuring out whether to toss Roberts or Teahan into your util slot. And should you lose an OF or 3b to injury, you're then pretty well covered. And there's little doubt you can spare Penny this year.

I don't think Teahan's power is "for real" long term, both based on his minor league numbers and as you noted, his G/F ratio. With only ten hitters and a H2H league, Roberts isn't as valuable, either. I think Penny, injury risk and all, is a far better Dynasty league keeper than Teahan and Roberts together.

All that being said, I'd play for the win now and deal Penny for Roberts and Teahan.

my reply was based on who i thought the better player was not which side helps you win this year. Chancellor's advice is good imo.

I'm not sure I would do this deal. Yes you'd be upgrading at UT but unless your in desperate needs of SBs, pulling Broussard out of your lineup to get both Teahan and Roberts in makes the deal basically Broussard/Penny/Snelling (or Upton) for Roberts/Teahan and a replacement P. I'd pass personally unless the standings dictate that this move would put you higher in the money. I'd look for a better deal.

Can you dump Clemens for a decent UT upgrade? Since you have excess pitching, maybe a team in contention would deal for Clemens and give up a hitter that can upgrade your UT spot. Someone mentioned Dmitri Young, I would think you could get someone of that ilk or a little better which would help your team this year and avoid giving up a solid keeper in Penny.

Broussard's my first baseman, and he doesn't have anything to do with this deal at all.

I decided to deal Neshek for Dave Roberts and stick with a Snelling/Roberts tandem for my final Utility spot. Hope it works out, and thanks for all the advice, guys!
