Billy Koch Syndrome - 04-10-2002, 12:10 PM

What goes through your mind when your closer costs you a save, put picks up a win? If you're OK in saves and need wins desperately, do you "hope" one of your closers blows a save and gets a win? I know it might hurt your ERA but wins are such a fickle category, I would think that you would take them wherever you can get them. Even if it cost you a save.

One of my pet peeves in rotisserie baseball is the blown save & win combination. One of the leagues I'm in actually discussed the idea of replacing saves with saves minus blown saves. At least that way, if a closer gets a blown save and a win, they sort of negate each other.

With wins being so hard to come by sometimes, losing a save to get a garbage win is a nice consolation prize, though I wouldn't want to see my closer consistently blowing his save opps to do it. I owned Koch in 2000 and he rang up 9 wins out of the pen, a good number of them blown saves. That was a nice addition to his 33 saves he gave me.

Of course, if you own an Oakland starter right now, watching Koch and the other members of the A's pen so far can only be worrying you. There's nothing more frustrating than watching your starter pitch well and the bullpen blow it -- and worse when another owner in your league has the reliever that gets the win that should have been yours!

95% of the time, I'd rather have my closer shut 'em down 1-2-3 to help in S, ERA and WHIP, than to have him blow the save, hurt my ERA and WHIP yet get me a vulture win. Still, it's a hell of a lot better than a BS and an L.

In the same category of frustration has to be when you have a closer, the set-up man comes in with your team down by a run, your team scores 5 runs, your closer comes in for the 9th inning and shuts them down. The set-up man and closer both pitch 1 inning, but the set-up man gets the win and there is no save.

No justice I tell you. My personal opinion? Just like there are rules governing what constitutes a save, there should be rules for a win. Something like a minimum number of innings pitched.

Speaking of...ChiSoxFan...whats the eal with Foulke this year? I haven't seen him pitch yet, but he's scaring the ****e out of me. I had Koch last year and he tormented me, now Foulke?

Will he regain form or did I buy another 31 dollar setup man?

I made the drive up from San Diego tonight to see my beloved Mariners in Anaheim. It wasn't pretty, they were really dialed in on Sele... although I was impressed with Sele's velocity (had good seats) he seemed to be missing RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of the plate, heh..

Oh well I have B. Lyon. I'm gonna give him another start.

I watched the Yankee- Blue Jay game. Lyon looked a helluva lot better than the box score shows. He really settled down after Giambi's second home run (missing in the middle of the plate like you said). He showed a lot of poise to not let it get to him and got Giambi struck out on a great sequence after that. Meanwhile, he would have gotten the win if Borbon didn't blow it for him.

P.S. I drafted Baldwin for $6. The silence was deafening on my bid. One of the most rewarding feelings in fantasy baseball is when you are the only one who believes in somebody and it works out!

Re: Baldwin--week one. Safeco will help, and I think he'll earn more than $6, but it IS possible to be a mediocre starter for the Ms.

I co-own a team with a friend and this exact thing happened to us last week in our HTH matchup. We had Hudson who pitched well in his first start and was set up for the W, only to have Koch blow the save and then vulture the W. Of course our opponent had Koch, so instead of being up 2-0 in the W category, we were tied 1-1! Argh! That kind of thing really irritates you. We wound up losing the category 3-2 for the week thanks to Koch!

Yeah, I was impressed with Lyon pulling it together after getting hit around early. To give that team 6 innings (although it doesn't sound like a big thing) was very important... even if it didn't necessarily help me fantasy wise.
