One of my pet peeves in rotisserie baseball is the blown save & win combination. One of the leagues I'm in actually discussed the idea of replacing saves with saves minus blown saves. At least that way, if a closer gets a blown save and a win, they sort of negate each other.

With wins being so hard to come by sometimes, losing a save to get a garbage win is a nice consolation prize, though I wouldn't want to see my closer consistently blowing his save opps to do it. I owned Koch in 2000 and he rang up 9 wins out of the pen, a good number of them blown saves. That was a nice addition to his 33 saves he gave me.
Of course, if you own an Oakland starter right now, watching Koch and the other members of the A's pen so far can only be worrying you. There's nothing more frustrating than watching your starter pitch well and the bullpen blow it -- and worse when another owner in your league has the reliever that gets the win that should have been yours! - Wes Westrum HCBB Champion -- 1992, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2008 -- Visit the HCBB Fantasy League Site -- http://hcbb.info/index.htm Check out my blog, The Last Honest Man Mark McGwire should just shut the hell up. 95% of the time, I'd rather have my closer shut 'em down 1-2-3 to help in S, ERA and WHIP, than to have him blow the save, hurt my ERA and WHIP yet get me a vulture win. Still, it's a hell of a lot better than a BS and an L.

In the same category of frustration has to be when you have a closer, the set-up man comes in with your team down by a run, your team scores 5 runs, your closer comes in for the 9th inning and shuts them down. The set-up man and closer both pitch 1 inning, but the set-up man gets the win and there is no save.
No justice I tell you. My personal opinion? Just like there are rules governing what constitutes a save, there should be rules for a win. Something like a minimum number of innings pitched.

I made the drive up from San Diego tonight to see my beloved Mariners in Anaheim. It wasn't pretty, they were really dialed in on Sele... although I was impressed with Sele's velocity (had good seats) he seemed to be missing RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of the plate, heh..
Oh well I have B. Lyon. I'm gonna give him another start. |

I watched the Yankee- Blue Jay game. Lyon looked a helluva lot better than the box score shows. He really settled down after Giambi's second home run (missing in the middle of the plate like you said). He showed a lot of poise to not let it get to him and got Giambi struck out on a great sequence after that. Meanwhile, he would have gotten the win if Borbon didn't blow it for him.
P.S. I drafted Baldwin for $6. The silence was deafening on my bid. One of the most rewarding feelings in fantasy baseball is when you are the only one who believes in somebody and it works out! |
