What could the Jays get for Shannon Stewart? - 04-07-2002, 09:06 PM

If Shannon Stewart's demand for a trade was true, (which I don't believe it was), what do you think J.P Ricciardi could get in return? I know for sure they are going after a starting pitcher very hard and probably trying to get rid of Mondesi but his contract is too large to get anything of major quality in return. For Shannon Stewart though, what could the Jays get? Pitching usually demands more in trades than hitting does so I'm think someone like Sidney Ponson from Baltimore. Are there any other guys out there you guys think the Jays could get for Shannon Stewart?

Im not sure what the Jays could get, but what would a trade do to Stewart's value?

I'm not sure what the Jays could get for Stewart either as what pitchers are on the trading block won't really become clear for another couple of months. However, I would have to think the Jays could get more than a crappy pitcher like Ponson for a Stewart. Unless Stewart were to get traded to Colorado I don't think his value would change at all with a trade.

I'm in NY and I think the Yankees were close to doing a Nick Johnson for Stewart trade straight up towards the end of spring training. Steinbrenner wanted to do it but his "baseball people" talked him out of it.

Well, let's look at what we know. The Jays offered Stewart straight up for Nick Johnson and were rebuffed out of hand. Stewart is obviously a pretty good OF and many teams other than the Yankees probably would have made the deal, but once Ricciardi has been publicly turned down at that level of talent by the Yankees it's going to be that much harder for him to get anything major in return for Stewart-- basically, why give up what the Yankees wouldn't when instead you can use it as a bargaining chip against the Jays? I don't see Stewart going anywhere soon.

Ok thanks guys, I meant to ask what you'd think the Jays could get regardless of whether they're available or not. May sound like a stupid question but I just want to see the type of quality pitcher Shannon Stewart could bring to Toronto should that pitcher become available.

How about Armando Benitez?

If Escobar goes back into the rotation, Benitez could close. The Mets don't need a leadoff hitter, but Stewart could be a #2 or #5-6 guy with that AVG and decent pop. Provided he could play CF

In terms of starting pitcher, I'd imagine they would want a young-ish SP with good potential, someone a little better than Ponson. Maybe like a Burnett or Juan Cruz (if he's 26 and not 23) type pitcher.

Now that Rondell is doing fine, I'm guessing that the Yanks are even less inclined to trade for Stewart, but what about Ted Lilly as trade bait?

JC, I don't see that sort of deal going down (Mets trading Benitez). The team needs pitching more than hitting right now.

I was thinking Burnett aswell JC, but he is probably too good to be obtained from dealing just Shannon Stewart. I'd say to get equal value, Burnett would be a good deal. But seeing as how the Jays got Brian Cooper for Brad Fullmer, Ponson for Stewart doesn't seem all that bad.

I've heard that the Jays will get rid of Delgado within 1 year or so. He makes $19 million per year or a wopping 25% of the teams payroll.

They trade Stewart for a first baseman. Trade Delgado for a pitcher.
