The Steelers radio announcer...ugh! - 01-15-2005, 09:59 PM

I listen to all my games on Sirius now, and you have the choice of listening to the home or away team, most of the time. Anyway, I heard the Steelers announcer, who is supposed to be LEGENDARY. I don't know his name. All I can say is that his voice grated on me far worse than chalk on a blackboard!

Also, last week I listened to the Seattle broadcast, and they were annoyingly to homerish. I like Seattle, but I couldn't stand listening to the announcers call Darrell Jackson "DRob" and Koren Robinson "KRob", Shawn Alexander was called "Shawnie", and the kicker, who I can't remember his name, I believe was called JB. And this was throughout the game. UGGGHHH!

Football announcers are notorious for their "homerism". I don't think that the guys in Pittsburgh or Seattle are any different than in other places. You gotta hear the Bills announcers sometimes.

I actually turn off the sound from the annoying TV announcers and tune in the Pittsburgh radio guys while watching the game.

Pittsburgh fans love Myron Cope. A lot of us grew up listening to him broadcast Steeler games in the 70's and wouldn't trade him for anyone even though his voice has gotten worse with his health problems this season(he's 75 years old). He's still comical and has a lot of great stories from his years with the team. I guess his squeaky voice is an acquired taste.

Myron Cope is about the only thing we Browns fans can make fun of in Pittsburgh anymore! I know he's a legend in Pittsburgh but I live in Canton, Ohio and we get the Steeler's radio signal loud and clear over here. Why must we be punished and have to hear him too???? Can you closed the door on the Fort Pitt tunnel so the signal doesn't make it over here??? I've listened to Myron Cope for probably 30 years, believe me...it's not an acquired taste! Maybe I need to give it 30 more....

Maybe, if he was doing Cleveland games instead of Pittsburgh games I would find him more annoying.

Myron Cope = Harry Carey

Myron, back in the 70's, sounded a little Gilbert Godfrey-ish. I don't know how his voice has changed with age, but he is a football institution.

Go Steelers!!!!!!!!!

i have epiphanies like that all the time. for example i was watching a basketball game today and realized pom poms are like a pair of tits. there's 2 of them. they're round. they shake. women play with them. thus instead of having two, cheerleaders have four boobs.

The funny thing about Myron Cope is that it's hard to believe that voice comes from that person. I remember the first time I saw him and I couldn't believe that it was him. It almost seems like the voice should come from some skinny little punk. He just doesn't fit the voice.

Cope is obnoxious and annoying (and I say this as a Steeler fan who sometimes listens via various links), but he is a devoted fan of his team, makes no bones about being a homer, and unlike some announcers here in Cincinnati, actually has a personality. The present Bengal announcers aren't all that great, but their predecessors had all the enthusiasm of a funeral director; then again, considering the teams they covered, maybe that was appropriate.

I was under the impression that most people in Pittsburgh did this, I know I do.

Myron Cope is 76 years old today. What a great birthday gift the Steelers can give him today! Someone called a Pittsburgh radio station yesterday to encourage people going to the game to get to their seats by 6:15 to sing happy birthday to Myron. That would be cool hearing 65,000 people singing Happy Birthday!
