What a subjective award. Jeter? A defensive award?!?
My god, I'm going back to the elections. They're safer than this thread... |

All this means is that for the second year a Gold Glove Yankee infielder will be asked to switch positions.

Actually, selecting Jeter for a Gold Glove probably wasn't as bad as picking Bret Boone at 2B. Among the 9 AL second basemen with enough appearances to qualify, Boone finished last in Zone Rating, last in Range Factor, and next to last in Fielding Percentage (ahead of only Soriano).

So who are all the winners?
I guess the voters got confused when they saw last year's GG winner at SS on the left side of the Yankee infield?
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again. The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older, Shorter of breath and one day closer to death. -"Time" "Freedom is seldom found by beating someone to the ground" - "Freedom" by Amos Lee "You will survive being bested" - "Southern Cross" |

As an aside, if Pujols doesn't get the NL gold glove, it will be a travesty. He had arguably the best year for a first baseman defensively in the last 4 years. His ZR and RF were off the charts. |

As Oakland A's pointed out, Bret Boone getting an award is a joke. I'm not sure that the defensive side of the game is catching up (in the media & fans eye) that the hitting end.
Web Gems = nice highlight play, as ESPN also shows bit hits on NFL games, but it's sizzle, not steak. There's nothing sexy with a SS getting to a would-be single up the middle and throwing the runner out in the 7th inning of a 2-1 game, but a Jim Edmonds diving catch has Gammons slobbering all over Harold Reynolds. Subjective Gold Glove (and Cy Young for that matter) voting, unlike the concrete award winners, are always up for debate. MLB will not be using zone rating to determine ratings. Stat heads can wail all they want to, it's not changing anytime soon. |
