Jake Westbrook perfect game thur 5 (sort of) - 04-19-2004, 09:29 PM

Jake Westbrook has a no hitter going through 5 innings, unfortunalety he didn't start the game. Jeff D'Amico started the game and gave up 4 runs without recording an out, then there was a lengthy rain delay. Westbrook came in and hasn't allowed a hit in 5 full innings so far.

If Westbrook makes it through 9 innings without giving up a hit, would he get credit for a no no? Sort of interesting circumstances.

Yes he is, good call.

7 IP, 0 hits, 0 BBs, 7 Ks, 83 pitches. Not bad at all.

Will he become another Ernie Shore?

To answer your question, Ernie Shore has an asterisked credit for a perfect game that he did not start. Babe Ruth started the game, hit a batter, got ejected, and Shore relieved him, and then finished the game without allowing another batter on-base.

Although they count that one in the record books, this one would be different -- but very, very unique.

Westbrook just got pulled to start the 8th inning. Rafael Betancourt is starting the inning. Good outing anyway Jake!

And now Betancourt is doing his Jeff D'Amico impersonation. Too bad Westbrook didn't stay in ...

A perfect game loss would have been something I'd try to remember forever.
