I heard the Expos front office (such as it is) would LIKE Cordero to be the guy, but I think he has to earn the job, or at least not lose it, in ST.

I've been billing Cordero as the one to go after for some time. I was never inspired by Biddle. He's the one I'd like to pick up cheaply if I can get him.

Although Chad Cordero may be the closer at some point in '04, I think it may be premature to call a 20-year old with less than one-half of a professional season under his belt.

My money's on Ayala.

My best advice to anyone who wants in on this closing situation: Don't overpay for any of these guys. This is shaping to be a fantasy-killer three-headed beast of a closer situation.

Unless, there is some definite word, then I'd stay far away with anything more than $4.

still feeling Ayala - 02-07-2004, 12:36 AM

Ayala might not start with the closer duties but he'll find his way there.

Gotta agree with Dane. A better source for a FAAB pickup or when your auction is at the $1 stage.

There is a chance that the Expos sign Urbina but I would lean toward Ayala if Biddle gets traded. Then in 05 Cordero gets his shot.

The pick of Chad Cordero in the first round last year by the Expos was concidered a "reach pick" by every draft expert. He was considered a 3rd round pick by eveyrone, but was taken by the Expos because they were limited to taking someone "signable" just because of their ownership situation.

You can't argue with the 1/2 season he had, but the fact is that he's a 3rd round talent with only a 1/2 season of pro-experience. It seems very unlikely that Cordero will step right in and take saves away from anyone unless he lights the world on fire this spring AND Biddle and Ayala look awful (or are pitching in another uniform.)

Agreed. Cordero looks like one of those "fashionable" darkhorses that guys will bid up. I think Ayala might be the one who flies under the radar, and IMO the one most likely to get the bulk of saves this year.

I can easily see a scenario where Biddle gets the job out of ST, with Ayala getting a handful of saves early on. Biddle gets traded at the break, Ayala takes over, and Cordero develops into a top-flight setup guy.

Any one of these guys, if the situation doesn't clarify, is the ideal $4 in the "early" mid-rounds or towards the end of the first closer run, where one of your "smarter than thou" leaguemates will grin to himself while snapping them up. If you introduce any of them at $4 they're going to get bid up to at least $7-- and I guarantee that anybody who gets the first will get the second or third at that price again, at least-- making them a great way to chew up an opponent's roster space and money.

At this point I'm more interested in knowing who that is in Cardboardbox's avitar! My interest in Expos' closers drops considerably every time that guy posts!

Do you really think she is playing that guitar? If so, why exactly would she be playing it in a bikini? That's the thing about girlie pictures. As soon as you see them in context, they are usually quite nonsensical. "Hey, look that girl lost her keys in her car... and she's looking around for them... and she has no underpants on." The male brain is an interesting thing. Our ability to suspend our disbelief when it comes to scantilly or un-clad women is truly wonderous.
