Hampton ranked first in range factor (3.17) and second in assists (52) among NL pitchers. Maddux was second in range factor (2.93) and first in assists (58). Hampton's fielding pct (.985) was better than Maddux's (.973). I think Maddux lost due to the fact that the same Atlanta press was watching both guys and thought Hampton, easily the better overall athelete, was a sharper fielder.

Obviously the voters did the right thing and didn't watch the post-season. Jose Cruz??? He did have a good season. How about Juan Pierre?

I agree with B-Fly - I think people just thought Hampton was better, and it helped that Maddux had 2 errors to 1 for Hampton.
I was a little surprised that Matheny won, since he only caught 27% of opposing base stealers, which was a worse percentage than Mike Piazza or Todd Hundley. And there were certainly a lot of other decent candidates - Ausmus, Schneider, Pudge, CJ, DMiller. Again, I guess it was partially because Matheny made the fewest errors (0). I was hoping for Marcus Giles and Adrian Beltre to win, but wasn't really expecting them to. And I thought there might be support for Cora or Izturis too. |

Hampton probably has the highest ratio of real baseball value to fantasy baseball value of any starting pitcher. He has a low strikeout rate and a mediocre BRA. His best assets, a low HR rate, great fielding, good stamina, and great hitting are almost useless in fantasy (apart from their contributions to his Wins and ERA).

Gee, and post season action doesn't affect voting? I sure don't see any other reason for Cubs Gonzalez losing the GG at SS. 6 fewer errors than Renteria, resulting in a 9 point better fielding percentage. Notably higher range factor for Gonzalez, too. And while I've watched a fair amount of Cub games this year, I'm no Cub fan...
But one critical boot in the post-season...and voila! Or, maybe it was Renteria's bat

It definitely seems to me that for many of these Gold Glove, even more so in the AL but in the NL as well, being a good hitter gives a player a distinct advantage, perhaps because it helps make them more visible to voters than, say, Cesar Izturis.

, who also led NL 3B in Assists, Double Plays started, and Zone Rating. 19 Errors isn't that many for a 3B; Rolen had 13 and Chavez had 14. He is particularly good on the tough throws. I really thought Beltre was the best defensive 3B in the league this year, although Rolen is certainly good too.

I know all of the MVP, CY, ROY and Manager awards are voted on prior to the postseason beginning, what about Gold Gloves.
I would assume this to be the case or else Pudge would have beaten out Matheny on his postseason alone. Who would have taken a bet at the beginning of the year that the Marlins would have 2 gold glovers but Pudge, Pierre and Alex Gonzalez would not get any of them......shocking. I like the pick of Cruz Jr. (butchered play in postseason notwithstanding.) Most eggregious pick in the NL - in my opinion - is Renteria. But there is probably no one favorite so I guess the votes were pretty well split and Renteria's name, bat and prior gloves pushed him over the top. anybody have any idea if they post the voting for these awards anywhere. I would love to see how close some of these races were? |
