Jack Morris- HOF? - 10-06-2003, 03:20 PM

In drafting for the all-time draft, I have been stumbling across many players that I have never heard of but had amazing careers. One that I just looked at is Jack Morris. He finished his career in 1994 with Cleveland.

The man won at least 14 games 13 out of 18 years.

His career 162-game average is:

16-11, 156 K's, 3.90 ERA

He ended his career with:

254-186, 2478 K's, 3.90 ERA

He was an All-Star 5 times and won the World Series MVP in 1991. Out of the 10 pitchers, he is compared to, 8 are hall of famers including Jim Palmer, Bob Feller, and Bob Gibson.

These seem like Hall Of Fame type numbers to me. Am I missing something here because I have never heard him mentioned or anything.

Max

Jack was a big game pitcher, but 3.90 era isnt good at al especially in that era and because he didnt reach 300 wins, I dont think think he belongs there, but he was a damn good pitcher.

Jack Morris pitched one of the greatest games I have ever seen against the Braves in the 1991 World Series. He is definitely a HOFer in my mind.

The league ERA for his career according to baseball-reference.com was 4.08 - so he was a little better than average, but not much. That makes it tough to put him in.

He also didn't really lead the league in a lot of categories (only 20 on the black ink test) and never won a Cy Young award, finishing in the top 3 only twice.

I would probably say that he does deserve to be in anyway, but that's partly because I grew up watching him. The two arguments in favor of him are his WS performance and his being arguably the best pitcher of the 80s.

Big game pitcher: yes
Hall of Famer: no

He is one of the those " good but not good enough " players.

The one pitcher and one hitter, that is still unbelievably not in the hall is Bert Blyleven and Ron Santo. Oh yeah and Pete Rose.
Of course, Rose has yet to become eligible.

I will agree that Morris was one of the best pitchers of the '80s, but I don't see him as HoF material. One of the greatest pitching performances I have ever seen in the Series in '91, but not HoF.

Ditto.........

Morris was a great big game pitcher, and his masterpiece against Atlanta in the 1991 World Series ranks as one of the beset I've ever seen. But I don't believe he's a HOFer.

I think of him as similar to Dave Steib, Dennis Martinez & Chuck Finley, except with better (but limited) post-season performances. I don't think he's a HOFer.
