Phelps: Lost season or two month rebound? -
08-05-2003, 07:01 PM
Someone just dropped Josh Phelps in my HR league, and I don't blame him. He might as well be Ken Phelps. The guy just ain't getting it done, and although playing time has something to do with it, he's not doing much with the time he IS getting. And there have been injuries....
Still, do you think he'll end strong like last year or is this season a wash for him? |

Phelps is very much within the team's plans for the immediate and ongoing future.
His year has been dampened by lingering minor injuries. His great second half last season had him on the radar and pitchers have exploited the holes in his long swing. With a strong hitting lineup around him, and better health, Phelps projects well as a Ritchie Sexson lite in the near future. That's not at all a bad thing. Given the team's other young weapons in Hinske, Wells, Hudson, Kielty, and Catalanotto, along with Delgado and a series of good outfield bats in the minors, Phelps is in the right place in terms of development to be part of the big picture. He's too clearly an obvious big DH bat to let him out of the organization and stuff a light power hitting player to eat up those at bats. Reed Johnson is a great sparkplug as a leadoff hitting OF 70% of the time, but not enough to play as an everyday DH. --Bob Kohm I was informed, VERY CLEARLY, not to do that again.... --fresno bob |
