Beane Counter Fave: Kevin Youkilis - 08-05-2003, 08:58 AM

Youkilis, the poster boy of sabermetrics over scouting, goes for a minor league record 71st consecutive game getting on base.

From Rotoworld:
Triple-A Pawtucket's Kevin Youkilis homered in the first game and had two hits in the second game of yesterday's doubleheader. He's reached base safely in 70 straight games.

Youkilis is hitting just .185 in eight games for Pawtucket, but he's managed to keep his streak alive. He has a chance to tie Kevin Millar's minor league record tonight.

Does anyone expect him to get recalled in September for a looksee, and what are his odds of starting at 3rd base for the Sox next year?

I think Bill Mueller signed a 2-year deal.

2003: $2.1M
2004: $2.1M
2005: Team option $2.1M or $0.3M buyout

Which isn't to say Mueller can't play 2B since Sanchez is gone and Todd Walker is a FA:

2001: $1.0M (+$0.15M signing bonus)
2002: $2.0M
2003: $3.4M
2004: Free Agent

yeah, I'm sure Mueller is guaranteed a spot somewhere, but you're right -- second is an option. I believe Youkilis is one of the BoSox' top prospects now, so maybe DH is in his future?

I dunno. Youkilis has very little power right now. I think the BoSox will save DH for someone who can bop. JC's idea of Youkilis at 3B and Mueller at 2B sounds reasonable to me.

With the Sox in the hunt, I think they will keep Youkilis at AAA and continue with the regular lineup. Even if they call him up after Pawtucket's season is over I dont think he will get many AB's.

I agree with JC about Mueller at 2B and Youkilis at 3B next year.

From Sportsline:

"Youkilis is a prospect the stat people love, because he has impeccable plate discipline and hits for a high average to boot. He's probably never going to be a superstar in the majors, but he'll be among the safest Fantasy selections once he gets there. Consider Youkilis in AL-only keeper formats, as he might get a September trial and contend for the starting third base job next spring."
