Angel Berroa - 07-14-2003, 06:56 PM

KC SS Angel Berroa has entered the break with a .283 BA, 9 HRS, 20 2BS, and 37 RBI. He was a top prospect ( Tejada comparisons) before he got injured in 2002 and also wass discovered that he was actually 2 years older than originally thought to be. Any thoughts on this 25 year old's future production? Last week on Baseball Tonight, Peter Gammons was saying that Berroa is one to watch and could finish the year with close to 25 hrs.

If Gammons said that, he musta been smokin' crack or something. Berroa's a decent player and all, and it's probably not completely unrealistic to expect him to continue at his current pace, but 16 home runs in the next 70 games? He has a total of 43 home runs in his professional career, spanning 510 games. He's not going to turn into Jim Thome or Alex Rodriguez all of a sudden.

As usual, consider the source.

A stamp of approval from Gammons or John Hunt can be the death nail.

I have Berroa and would dearly love him to finish with 25 hrs, but im not holding my breath. When he began the season it was thought he might struggle but he has held his own. He has exceeded expectations but 25 HRs is too tall a task.

If anything rookies tend to hit the wall in the 2nd half and struggle.

He could finish with 25Hrs.

I think 2/3 or 3/4 of their second half games are against the AL central's steller pitching.

The Royals' opponents the rest of the way have allowed a weighted average of 1.111 HR per game, compared to a league average of 1.107 HR / G. Not a factor.

Not bad for a toss in (Berroa was included in the A's - Royals Damon trade). Beane got shafted in this deal!

Not really - Damon played good for them down the strech that year and they almost made it to the World Series. Plus they had an up and coming SS - Tejeda - at the time.

The A's also got Nick Swisher as draft pick compensation for Damon from the Red Sox.

yeah, Beane loves those compensatory picks (which they almost got rid of during the last negotiations).

My point was Berroa's talent was misjudged because he WAS a flip in, but no need to argue over it.

Being a long-suffering Royals fan (as perhaps you can tell by my avatar), I'm as excited as anyone that Berroa is doing well. I don't know if the Royals have had a good shortstop since the days of U.L. Washington and Freddie Patek, with the possible exception of a few years from Kurt Stillwell.

Just like the Tigers did when they dealt Smoltz for Alexander. Damon did well for the A's and they got a draft pick out of Damon when he moved on.
