Team Hall of Fames - 01-12-2003, 05:55 PM

Just curious- the Rangers have announced the establishment of a "Rangers Hall of Fame," which will induct its first members this year. You have to have played at least 3 years for Texas, or led the team in a major statistical category, to be considered for induction.

I'm sure they exist, but do any of your favorite/local teams have a team HOF? And is it something cool, or just a lame marketing thing designed to "attract fans?"

I think it serves a dual purpose, kind of what you already hit on.

As for the Rangers requirement to have a player qualified based on at least three years of play seems a little bit of a "puff" requirement, doesn't it? Young players are typically signed to three year deals, so it doesn't take much to meet that criteria. It seems to me that if a team's HoF were to have more meaning, the requirement would be something along the lines of 5 or 7 years with the team...

For the Brewers, they have a thing called "the walk of fame". Players in the walk of fame get a big plaque in the ground all the walkway up to the front of the stadium. I imagine it's more or less a marketing thing, but I suppose it's sort of cool. I would imagine most teams have something like this.

For the Brewers, currently the following players have been inducted:
Robin Yount
Paul Molitor
Rollie Fingers
Henry Aaron

The Cardinals have a hall of fame across the street from Busch Stadium. It's been a long time since I visited it, but I remember thinking it was pretty neat.

I'm pretty sure the Yankees have had something like this for 70 years or so... used to be on the field, actually...
