Question Vernon Wells question - 07-30-2001, 05:22 PM

Hello everyone! If the trade rumors that involves Stewart or Cruz goes through, what can we expect from this guy? I have not heard much of him lately and his brief stay early in the season was just okay. I'm looking for Steals and a decent OBP.

Thanks in advance!

I think having him in the lineup this yr would help him more for next yr. I think hell be more effective next yr than this yr, but hes deff. worth a pickup for a reservist.....

Wells is considered a 5 tool prospect who's near ready for the bigs. So he's the J.D. Drew type. We might expect to see 30 HR's in 3 years, or Rubin Rivera......

Thumbs down not a Wells fan! - 07-31-2001, 12:48 AM

I think that when a kid tears it up at a level, and the franchise decides to not rush him to the majors it shows that they are generally worried about possibly "ruining" him. On the other hand, the best ballplayers there way onto big league rosters.

The Jays however are dumping payroll and know that Wells has a good glove and good speed so he makes someone in the OF expendable from that perspective. However, don't confuse the one situation with the other.

Wells still can't hit AAA pitching and he won't hit AL pitching when he gets there. He's a very young kid and the Jays have the luxury of waiting on him, but the economics of the game have jimmied up their judgement. Wells isn't going to hit in 2001, he's not going to hit in 2002. In 2003 he could become Mike Cameron (the White Sox version) and in 2004 he can become the All-star, 5 tool Mike Cameron that is winning leagues for people bold enough to take a flier on him this season.

I think he can stick around until he learns to hit and that's what Toronto is counting on, but from a fantasy baseball perspective he's going to be an expensive bust for a few seasons yet, IMHO.
