Phillies Farm System

PhuturePhillies.com reranks the top 15 in the phillies system after the Lee trade. Top 3 are obvious, but there's some interesting talent still there. Gose looks like one of the fastest players in the minors and the 16 year old Domingo Santana looks intriguing.

Quote:
01. Kyle Drabek, RHP – Potential #1, handling AA well, should be ready to help the big club in the 2nd half of 2010. Innings need to be managed from here on out, but he’s been awesome.

02. Dominic Brown, OF – Handling the pitcher friendly FSL, doesn’t appear that he’s missed a beat coming back from the injury, and still showing power.

03. Michael Taylor, OF – The third head of the three headed monster at the top, just continues to put up numbers, and should give the Phillies some tough decisions to make at this time next year.

1. Dominic Brown, of
He's not doing anything to dispel the Darryl Strawberry comparisons.
2. Kyle Drabek, rhp
Tommy John surgery helped him mature, and his stuff hasn't suffered.
3. Michael Taylor, of
Has proven his 2008 breakout was no fluke by tearing up Double-A.
4. Travis d'Arnaud, c
Some talent evaluators would have taken him over Marson in the Lee trade.
5. Sebastian Valle, c
Wasn't ready for low Class A at age 18 but is destroying short-season pitching.
6. Trevor May, rhp
The latest product of the Phillies' extensive scouting efforts in the Pacific Northwest.
7. Anthony Gose, of
Speedster is coming on after scuffling in his first two months in low Class A.
8. Yohan Flande, lhp
The lone 2009 Futures Gamer who wasn't written up in the Prospect Handbook.
9. Brody Colvin, rhp
The most talented Phillies 2009 draftee slid to the seventh round, remains unsigned.
10. Antonio Bastardo, lhp
Struggled in his big league debut before going on the DL with a shoulder strain.

I hope the phillies sign colvin. They took flyers on 4 difficult sign HS kids with picks 7,8,14 and 16. Only Singleton at 8 has signed yet.

Top to bottom, the Phillies might have the best organization in baseball right now. It's amazing to me that they still have this impressive stockpile of talent in the minor leagues while having such massive talent in the bigs.

I think that I saw that they are supposedly close to a deal with Colvin, so I am optimistic.

I'll second that. It's impressive that some of the organizations that were very weak in their minor league talent and operations 5 years or so back are now so strong, such as Philly and Texas. The latter two have improved at the top as well.

That's not a knock on your Dodgers, eld. IMO they've maintained their high level of both quantity and quality.

Phils sign 6th rounder Stephen Inch who was expected to attend Kentucky.

PhuturePhils writeup after the draft:
Quote:
R6 – Stephen Inch, RHP (Vauxhall Academy, Canada) – Inch was a late riser in a weak Canadian crop this year. He’s a typical Phillies target, tall and a thin frame, lots of projection here. His fastball is short at the present time, mid-upper 80’s, but he has a clean delivery and good makeup. He’s committed to Kentucky, which has a decent track record at holding their recruits, including 2008 draft pick James Paxton, who was one of the better prospects to come out of Canada in recent years. BA had Inch ranked 2nd in Canada in what they noted was a very weak crop.
Can't find how much they had to bust slot to keep him out of college though. Rumors say they are close to signing two more of their over slot HS draftees: Andrew Susac (16) and Jake Stewart (14).

Quote:
R14 – Jacob Stewart, OF (Rocky Mountain HS, CO) – Ahh, Jacob Stewart. I posted a little note from Keith Law where he said the Phillies were one of the teams that heavily scouted Stewart, and they were considering him with their 2nd round pick. My guess is they got a dollar amount and realized it wasn’t happening there, so they passed and just took a flier on him later. He’s one of the best athletes in the draft but scouts have big questions about his hit tool, which is a central theme among Phillies draft picks. He’s committed to Stanford, Ruben Amaro’s alma mater and is likely a tough sign. I’d say it would probably take at least 2nd round money to buy him out of college. He was ranked the top prospect in Colorado and 74th overall in the country.
Quote:
R16 – Andrew Susac, C (Jesuit HS, CA) – I don’t know what it is, but I like Susac a lot and was excited to see them grab him, even if he’s not really signable. He’s one of the best defensive catchers in the draft but his bat needs work. He’s got a commitment to Oregon State, which seems pretty likely, but he’ll be an interesting guy to follow in college for the next 3 years. If his bat develops, he’s a 1st/2nd round pick. Was ranked 24th in CA and 112th overall.
I'm worried that the cost for these two might preclude signing Colvin, but I had always said if they signed 3/4 of Colvin, Singleton, Stewart and Susac that the draft would be a success. Throw in impressive debuts from matt Way (5) and HS signings from Inch(6) and Altherr(9) and it's a pretty decent haul and an aggressive cap busting draft.

edited since I had messed up last year's slot bust flier cosart with this year's colvin.

Susac is very unlikely to sign. Team is going full-court press on Stewart. Colvin could go either way.

great signing with colvin. i think they would have given his money to stewert to sign if colvin wasn't listening but he was.

Colvin becomes the centerpiece of this draft. Singleton is hitting well in the GCL, Way is pitching well, and you got some young guys in Dugan, Hudson, Inch, Altherr and a few other late round guys to keep an eye on. Decent draft.

went to reading last night.

Drabek: Gave up 3 runs in the first inning. First guy scorched a ball down the right field line that the 1st baseman couldn't get to for a double. Next guy got an infield hit, third guy crushed a ball over the fence. Not sure what the pitches were on each. He then went through 6 innings giving up 2 more runs. His fastball was between 93-96. Threw an off-speed pitch that was 84-86, and a change maybe that was around 76-78.

Brown is wiry. 6'5' and about 200 lbs. He crushed a ball off the fence for a double in the first inning. Beat out an infield swinging bunt for a single in the 8th when the r-phils rallied to win the game.

Susdorf was DHing this game. He looked really ugly on a couple of swings. I wasn't too impressed.

Mathiewson on rehab. Pitched 2 scoreless innings. threw mid-nineties. Threw one 98 but it went over the hitter, over the catcher, over the ump to the screen. Ump must have said something to him after the inning because they shared a laugh.

Rosenberg: Came in for the final out of the game. Escelona had been in to get the save but after getting 2 outs he put two people on. Rosenberg came in at that point. I was shocked to see the gun show 99 on one pitch. I didn't realize he had that kind of stuff. The guy has shot up through the ranks this season and looks like someone they are really looking at for out of the pen down the line. He got the out, the phils got the win.

I was in the RF bleachers so didn't have the greatest view of pitches, and honestly, I have little idea what I am looking at. take it all with a grain of salt.

Brody Colvin made his professional debut last night in the GCL. Also nice to see is that Cosart is pitching finally and doing pretty well. Last night's line:

Code:
Player IP	H	R	ER	BB	SO	HR	ERA
Condrey 1.0	1	0	0	0	1	0	0.00
Colvin, B 2.0	0	1	0	1	2	0	0.00
Bastardo 1.0	0	0	0	1	0	0	0.00
Cosart (W, 2-2)	5.0	2	0	0	0	7	0	2.22
Box from MILB.com

Drabek is finished pitching for the year. He reached 100 more innings than last year, so they shut him down. He'll probably start next year at AA Reading with a mid-season promotion to AAA Lehigh like they did with Carrasco this year.

** Updated with OF Info **

Just parroting some info from PhuturePhillies.com here.
Quote:
Its that time, Baseball America lists its top 20 prospects from each US domestic league. The Phillies placed 4 guys in the GCL top 20; Jarred Cosart (4), Jon Singleton (7), Domingo Santana (10) and Jonathon Villar (18).
They are also going through Position by Position level by level with reviews and predictions on where guys end up next year.

Around the System:

Starting Pitching AAA-AA
Starting Pitching Rookie-A+

Bullpen AA-AAA
Bullpen A
Bullpen Rookie-Shortseason

Catchers
First Basemen
Second Base
Short Stop
Third Base
Low-A Outfield
High-A and above OF

My reviews:

Lots of good starting pitching potential with Drabek a stud and, May, Cosart, Colvin, DeFratus, Stutes, Worley, Flande, Way, Cloyd, Cisco, and Savery all worth watching.

Decent relief that's not too far away in Mathieson, Rosenberg, Schwimmer,

Catching: D'Arnaud started off slow but came on in the second half of the season and played very well. Should be in high A next year. Valle was over matched in Lakewood, but played well when he was sent back to age appropriate Williamsport. Kennelly looks like an interesting supersub, playing C, 1st, 3rd in Reading this year.

First base: Next to nothing. Singleton looks like he might be a decent player, but he's in low-a right now. there is nothing anywhere else in the system that even looks to have potential.

Second Base: Nothing. Buschini was a 4th rd pick this past draft but had a poor season in low A. We'll see next year, but right now nothing to even remark about here.

Shortstop: Still not much to see here. Galvis is still young, 20 and playing in AA. He's major league ready with his glove, but not with the bat. He's got time, but I'm suspect he will ever get there. I've read positive things about Hanzawa, but the numbers don't match. As stated above Villar was rated the #18 prospect in the GCL this year, but he's got a long way to go.

Third Base: Some short term serviceable organization filler if the phillies had an injury, but nothing else. 2008 First Round Pick Hewitt looks to be moving to CF.

Outfield: Tons of talent here headlined by studs Taylor and Brown. Gose stole 75 bases this year. Needs to work on getting more contact but his makeup is supposed to be very good for an 18 year old. Athletic, confident and a team leader. 17 year old Domingo Santana was voted the 10th best prospect in the GCL this year after hitting 288/.388/.508. He had 6 HRs and 3 SBs in just 118 ABs. Not sure what to do with Quinton Berry who hit .266/.355/.335 with 48SBs but will need to be protected or might leave via rule-5. Mayberry has been filling in for the MLB team, but I don't see him cracking the phils starting lineup with the guys who are there and the guys who are behind him. Different organization might be good for him. Steve Susdorf played very well for Clearwater but struggled in Reading. Next year will tell a lot. Lots of toolsy draft picks in Hewitt, Collier, Dugan, Altherr, Hudson, converted pitcher Jiwan James and D'Arby Meyers have yet to capitalize, but they are all still young and worth watching. Lots to be excited about here.

My top 10 that I'm pulling out of my ass right now:
1) Brown
2) Drabek
3) Taylor
4) D'Anarud
5) Gose
6) Santana
7) Cosart
8) Singleton
9) May
10) Colvin

not sure why the phillies have their own thread (other than that I started it) but I figure I should keep it going.

Anyway, BA top 10 for the phillies posted today.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today...10/269125.html
Quote:
1. Domonic Brown, of
2. Kyle Drabek, rhp
3. Michael Taylor, of

5. Trevor May, rhp
6. Anthony Gose, of
7. Sebastian Valle, c
8. Jarred Cosart, rhp
9. Antonio Bastardo, lhp
10. Domingo Santana, of
A couple of interesting notes from their 2013 Phillies starting line-up piece:

No Michael Taylor (predicting a trade?)
Starting 3B: Sebastian Valle
Other rookies listed: C D'Arnaud, RF Brown, 3rd SP Drabek, 5th SP May
Closer: Ryan Madson

Also interesting, Jiwan James (converted Pitcher) got the nod at both Most Athletic and Fastest Baserunner over Gose.

On another note, Mathieson (pitching well in the AFL) was added to the 40 man roster.

Tiers for Phillies Prospects...

http://phuturephillies.com/2009/11/2...ers/#more-4584

Quote:
As someone who loves to rank things, whether it be Phillies prospects, Seinfeld episodes, or fantasy football players, one of the things that I find most useful is rankings using tiers. Saying object X is ranked 1 and object Y is ranked 5 doesn’t tell you much unless you know the gap in quality between #1 and #5. For instance, if #1 is a Jaguar and #5 is a BMW, that’s different than #1 being a Ferrari and #5 being a Honda Civic. Or in baseball terms, if Domonic Brown is our #1 position player prospect, Michael Taylor is #2, and Jiwan James is #5, its important to understand the dropoff in prospect value from 1 to 2, and then 2 to 5, for instance. Lots of prospects have similar upsides, similar profiles, and similar projection, so just knowing they rank, say, 10 and 15, doesn’t tell you much unless you know just how similar the expectations are. So I’ve decided to try and create a little system to group prospects. Check below for more..
