Skip Caray Back on TBS!!

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hammer 07-17-2003 07:51 PM

NOOOOO!!!!!!

One of the worst announcers on tv . UGH

Moonlight J 07-17-2003 07:57 PM

thank god for the mute button....knowledgeable the man is, but his voice grates on every last one of my nerves

bcollins 07-18-2003 08:38 AM

The man does nothing but whine....from about the 3d inning on he is ready to go home, and he let's everyone know about it. Yes, thank goodness for the mute button

cavebird 07-18-2003 11:54 AM

I expected getting these remarks, but I still don't understand why people don't like him.

Yes, he has a bit of "homer" aspect to him, but he isn't bad about it like the White Sox gang. After all, he is a Braves announcer--he should have a bit of a "homer" aspect.

He's knowledgeable, funny at times and very sharp. Sometimes I wonder if people don't like him because they don't get half the things he says.

Caray detractors, please give me more of an explanation so I can understand. Caray supporters, please show yourselves so I know that I am not alone.

I don't mind the homer part and I agree that he is knowledgable and that some might not understand what he is referring to half the time. My biggest gripe, as stated above, is he is just so whiney....like he has no desire to be at the game and can't wait for it to get over.

Cavebird - I think the line about people not getting the things he says would be true. Caray, and for that matter, all the Braves' announcers, have been much maligned by many over the years for whatever reasons. Perhaps it's because they refuse to do it like all the "new generation" announcers (and I use that term VERY loosely) a la the Dick Vitale/Chris Berman/FOX idiots that rule our sports coverage now, with all their catchy phrases and yelling.
Maybe I'm just an old fogey, but give me the TBS crew, Marty Brennaman, Vin Scully, Joe Tait, etc. any day over the "in-your-face extreme bunch."

Just my .02.

I always liked Caray. I watched him for years in the 80's (one of the dark times in Braves' history). Haven't been able to watch much baseball since the early 90's until recently.

EDIT: And, TBS has the best camera coverage/clarity of any other network. No questions about it.

I got the Extra Innings package from DirecTV. I have to say, Caray is by far better than 90% of the announcers I hear.

The worst...

(In no particular order of dislike)

Yankees, White Sox, Red Sox, Mariners

The best...

Vin Scully!!!! I don't really like the Dodgers, but Scully is one reason for me to watch their games. If he is broadcasting, I'll watch the Dodgers' just to hear his call. He is quite knowledgeable and almost never stops talking. Oh, did I mention that he does the whole game by himself?

The Milwaukee broadcasting team is also good.

Like everyone else , I find him hard on the ears

What do you mean by that? Is it what he says, how he says it, or just his voice?

And obviously not everyone else. This thread shows I am not the only one who likes him.

Don Quixote 07-18-2003 12:53 PM

I'm not fond of his voice, but I prefer him to the rest of the Braves announcers (no contest) and he sometimes gets off a good line, unlike, say any Mets announcer.

My favorite has to be from around 1989, a nothing late-season game in LA, 2 in the morning, score 2-2 or similar, 14th inning or so--"One of these days SOMETHING will happen." Very dry, droll, perfect for that situation.

Skip's also been known to say things that are not part of the party line in Atlanta, even though he's a pretty blatant homer most of the time, the same thing we get in Cincinnati from Marty Brenneman--An announcer loyal enough to side with his employers when there's any doubt, but secure enough to criticize when need be, with love and respect.

And yes, I prefer the "old-time" approach, which assumes that you don't need to be yelled at (McCarver, just shut up once in a while), that you know something about the game being played, that you're listening because you want to know what's happening and because you like baseball, and that you want to be entertained and not pandered to.

There is no denying that Skip Caray is a very knowledgable baseball guy..........however, after living in Atlanta for 8 years, I came to be one of those guys who didn't like him very much. For me, it really wasn't his voice or his 'whininess'; rather, it was more of his demeanor and the way that he would interact with the fans. He would host (and may still, I'm not sure, don't live there anymore) a pre or post game radio show, and would make it a ROUTINE thing to chastise and belittle the fans who would call in with their questions (which granted were asanine and novice sometimes). I always thought he had a huge chip on his shoulder. Just my 2 cents....

I was refering to all those who have voiced displeasure at listening to his whiny voice. He is intellegent enough . Its just my opinion . I grew up on Rizzuto and many couldnt stand him for his voice and "homerism" . No biggie . I dont like him.

friarfan 07-18-2003 03:15 PM

I've said it beofer on this site, but I'll say it again....Skip Caray sounds like Kermit the Frog on Quaaludes.

Nothing against the man personally. But that's the first thing that pops into my head everytime I watch the Bravos on TBS.
