Closers in waiting are not ordained by the Bullpen Gods.  If a heavenly light shone on each team's 'pen at the beginning of the year and a voice spoke, saying, "Hey, this guy's next in line!  Followed by this one!" it'd make fantasy owners' lives a lot easier.  However, that's not what we have, and as a result, closer speculation is part tea leaves, part guesswork, and part dumb luck.  Still, there is something of a method to it. Chris reviews one particular method and then discusses how to apply it to a few teams as examples (or useful information).

We're all familiar with the idea of a player regressing to his performance mean.  Gary Sheffield's probably not going to hit -.250 all season, for example; of course, A-Rod's not going to belt out 100 HR either.  Still, there's a reason that fantasy baseball players are concerned about regressions - they represent either great buying or selling opportunities if you time them right.
